The Town of Wake Forest now expects the renovated Taylor Street Park Playground, located at 416 N. Taylor St., to reopen in early summer 2026, after construction crews encountered unexpected challenges beneath the worksite.

Why the delay?
The playground was temporarily closed for renovation in February, and was originally scheduled for completion in late spring. According to town officials, the contractor has unearthed a series of concrete footers buried several feet underground — remnants of the many facilities that have occupied the site over the past 160 years.
Since 1865, the property where Taylor Street Park now sits has, at various times, been home to a public school, a residential duplex, a volunteer fire department, a water tower, a basketball court, and a public pool.
Sprayground also closed
Because of its proximity to the active construction site, the Taylor Street Park Sprayground will remain closed until the playground renovations are complete. Signage and barricades have been posted at the site to alert community members of the temporary closures.

What the new playground will offer
When complete, the renovated Taylor Street Park Playground will feature:
- Ramped playground structures designed to provide ease of access for people of all mobility ranges
- Climbers, ladders, sensory experiences, play panels, a rocker, swings, slides, and balance challenges
- Seating and shaded areas
The total cost of the initiative is $700,000.
