Hurricane & Tropical Weather

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30. Wake Forest is inland but feels remnants of major storms — heavy rain, wind, and power outages.

Basic prep checklist

  • 3 days of water (1 gallon per person per day) and non-perishable food
  • Phone chargers and a battery bank or solar charger
  • Flashlights with fresh batteries; first-aid kit; 7+ days of medications
  • Cash (ATMs may be down); waterproof bag for important documents
  • Full tank of gas in your vehicle

Winter Weather

The Triangle sees a few winter events per season — typically ice, sleet, and occasional snow. Roads and tree-loaded power lines are the biggest hazards.

Before the storm

  • Cover outdoor faucets and disconnect hoses
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so heat reaches pipes
  • Drip cold-water faucets on the coldest pipe-prone fixtures
  • Charge phones and battery banks; move pets to shelter

Power Outages

Most of Wake Forest is served by either Wake Forest Power (town-owned) or Duke Energy. Reporting is separate by provider.

Falls Lake Water Levels & Releases

Falls Lake is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. During heavy rain, the Corps may release water from the dam — which affects the Neuse River downstream, including parts of east Wake County.
