Franklinton’s historic downtown has quietly become one of the most interesting small-town destinations in the region — a craft brewery in a restored Main Street theater, an active social district where you can carry a drink between bars, a restored Veterans Memorial Park, and a 10-acre sunflower field on the site of an old textile mill. Here is what to do.
Parks & Outdoor Recreation
- Beech Creek Park (end of Dogwood Lane) — Natural hiking trails through wooded terrain along Beech Creek. Trail map at the entrance kiosk, gravel parking, dawn-to-dusk hours. Closes during inclement weather and flooding.
- Veterans Memorial Park (51 S. Main St) — Renovated in 2024 through donations from USAF Veterans Joe and Stephanie Farrell. Commemorative bricks available through American Legion Post 52; hosts Legion events year-round. In the heart of downtown.
- Franklinton Flower Fields (between NC 56 and E. Mason St on the former Burlington Mills site) — 10 acres of town-planted sunflowers and wildflowers. Sunflowers generally bloom July through August. Free, no admission. Part of Franklinton’s Bee City USA designation.
Downtown Franklinton
- Franklinton Social District — A designated outdoor drinking area active Thursday–Saturday 5–10 p.m. and during special events. Alcoholic beverages purchased from participating ABC-permitted downtown businesses (in official FSD-marked cups) may be carried within the district boundaries — Owl’s Roost, the new restaurants, and the bars are all part of it.
- Downtown Walking Loop — 1.33-mile loop on downtown sidewalks. Map.
- Franklinton Community Garden (602 E. Mason St, behind the Senior Center) — Fresh produce distribution Saturdays at 11 a.m. during growing season.
- Franklinton Library (9 W. Mason St) — Franklin County Library branch.
Signature Annual Events
- Great Franklinton Pumpkin Pageant — Halloween night student and community pumpkin carving contest.
- Outdoor Movie Night — Multiple dates throughout the year on the Town Hall front lawn. Free popcorn.
- Christmas Decoration Contest — December, residents and businesses within town limits.
- Arbor Day Tree Planting — Spring. Franklinton has been a Tree City USA for approximately 40 consecutive years.
- Franklinton Run Club — Every Monday, 6 p.m. Free; a roughly 2-mile downtown loop. Waiver required.
